As we age, our body changes, including our upper eyelids. The decrease in skin elasticity can result in excess skin and protrusion of the natural fat behind the eye. This leads to a “droopy,” fatigued, and aged appearance. Common complaints patients wish to address include heavy upper eyelids, decreased vision, difficulty wearing makeup, and loss of the natural eyelid crease. These complaints can be more pronounced if eyebrow droop occurs.
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most frequently performed facial procedures. Removing the excess skin, muscle, and fat will restore the natural upper eyelid crease. Dr. Selem will meticulously reconstruct the natural crease in its natural position so that when the eyes are open, there is no visible scar. This will make your eyes look refreshed and rejuvenated, with the most natural-looking result. When excess upper eyelid skin is severe enough to obstruct vision, it can be deemed medically necessary to remove. In those cases, the procedure is commonly covered by most insurance providers.
The upper blepharoplasty procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and can be performed in the office with the patient under local anesthesia, or at an outpatient surgical facility with sedation. A 1 cm thick contact lens is placed to protect the eyeball. An incision is carefully constructed along the upper eyelid crease. Patients should anticipate swelling and bruising for 7-10 days after eyelid surgery. Ice-packs will be placed over the eyes during the first 24 hours. Sutures used are self absorbing and dissolve 7-10 days after the procedure. Patients are seen at 1 week and 2 weeks after the procedure for their post-operative appointments. Dr. Selem will prescribe eye drops and ointment to aid with the healing until the eyelids re-establish their normal state. This procedure can be performed in conjunction with other facial procedures that share the same incision line (ptosis repair, internal brow lift).
